For this Memorable Monday, we are going to be talking about someone who made a song I remember hearing back in 2017 to 2019, when I used to work for my mom’s business at the flea market. There was a man from Germany who used to sell his products next to us. He would play music every Saturday and Sunday, usually on a radio station where they play songs from the 80s. The song I remember hearing starts out with a loud keyboard play and chimes of church bells mixed in with the song. I was hooked and typed it down on my phone to listen to it when I was at home. I searched it up on YouTube, pressed play, and just let the music flow through my ears. I loved it, because of the sound got you hooked on it, and the lyrics had an emotional impact on me. That song was “Always Something There to Remind Me”, by Naked Eyes. So, for today’s Memorable Mondays, we are going to be talking about the late lead vocalist of Naked Eyes; Peter Byrne.
A Brief History on Peter Byrne
Peter James Bryne was born in Islington, North London, on June 9, 1952 (Unknown, 2026). Byrne was an English singer and songwriter, best known for being the lead vocalist of new wave and synth-pop band Naked Eyes (Unknown, 2026). He was the fourth of six children of James and Olive (née Salusbury) Byrne (Unknown, 2026). He left secondary school at the age of 16 to study art in Essex (Unknown, 2026). Later he moved to Bath, where he joined the local music scene (Unknown, 2026).
Byrne, along with Roland Orzabal, Curt Smith (where Orzabal and Smith would go on to form Tears for Fears (Evans, 2026)), Manny Elias, and his future music partner in Naked Eyes, Rob Fisher, were members of a short-lived new wave band called Neon (Unknown, 2026). The band was together from 1979 to 1982. In 1982, Byrne and Fisher formed Naked Eyes. Within two years Naked Eyes had scored four Top 40 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 (Evans, 2026). Naked Eyes’ first hit was, “Always Something There to Remind Me”, a synth-pop cover version of the 1963 song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick, which peaked at No.8 during the summer of 1983. The band had three subsequent top 40 hits: “Promises, Promises”, “When the Lights Go Out”, and “(What) In the Name of Love” (Oh yeah. I remember hearing two of them songs) (Unknown, 2026). “Promises, Promises” was written by Bryne and Fisher, not to be confused with the Bacharach-David song of the same title that was a hit for Warwick (Evans, 2026).
In 1984, Naked Eyes disbanded following the release of their second studio album, Fuel for the Fire (Unknown, 2026). The album had a modest hit “(What) In the Name of Love” but failed to match the success of the debut album (Evans, 2026). Fisher passed away in 1999 at the age of 42 following a cancer surgery (Evans, 2026). The cancer was bowel cancer (Perricone, 2026).
Byrne is known for an electronic cover version of The Rolling Stones’ 1966 “Paint It Black”. Byrne provided backing vocals on Stevie Wonder’s 1985 hit “Part-Time Lover” (another song I love listening to) (Evans, 2026). Leading the song to reach No. 1 in the US (Evans, 2026). Byrne wrote the song “I Am the Cute One” in 1993 for the Olsen Twins (Evans, 2026).
In 2001, Byrne released his debut and sole solo studio album The Real Illusion; featuring some of the last tracks he had written with Fisher for a proposed third Naked Eyes studio album (Unknown, 2026).
In 2005, Naked Eyes was reformed by Bryne. Later in 2007, Naked Eyes released Fumbling with the Covers, an album of the cover version and Naked Eyes hits (Unknown, 2026). In 2008, Naked Eyes completed a US tour known as the Regeneration Tour along with Belinda Carlisle of the Go – Go’s, ABC and the Human League (Unknown, 2026).
On June 8, 2021, Naked Eyes released their final studio album, Disguise the Limit (Unknown, 2026). A remaster of the original Naked Eyes self-titled album was released in 2025 (Evans, 2026).
In Bryne’s personal life, he married the poet and artist Elena Karina Byrne. They divorced in 2015. He has three children. On September 14, 2026, Byrne passed away at the age of 74, after a brief illness. The death was later revealed to be an “acute hemorrhagic stroke”, per a death certificate filed with the Los Angeles Department of Health and obtained by PEOPLE (Kaplan & Bacher, 2026). Byrne also has an underlying condition of colitis, which may have contributed to his death but was not the cause (Kaplan & Bacher, 2026).
Why is Peter Byrne so Memorable?
Peter Byrne is so memorable for my childhood, is that song “Always Something There to Remind Me”, was a good to song for me, when I was going through a feeling of unrequited love and the “should of, would of,” speeches that make me feel like a failure and being mad at myself. This song kind of gave a bittersweet kind of song that eases the pain of rejection and to accept the fact that not everyone is going to validate your feeling. I am surprised that Byrne was the background vocalist for Stevie Wonders, “Part-Time Lover”, the song that he wrote for the Olsen Twins, the song “Promises, Promises”, and “(What) In the Name of Love”. I would hear these songs a lot when I went to beaches or flea markets where they would play 80’s music throughout my childhood and even currently. It was the emotional impact from the “Always Something There to Remind Me”, got me through those uneasy feeling and not being able to go to someone to help me heal with those pains, when others have told me to shut it and get over it.
If you want to see the other artist that made “Always Something There to Remind Me”, there is a website to check out call Ted Tocks Covers, where he gives all the original songs and covers of certain music. For Peter Byrne, who have wrote and sang good songs that were fu and got people through so tough times, that is why Peter Byrne is part of Memorable Mondays. Rest in peace with Peter Bryne and Rob Fisher from Naked Eyes.
