For this Memorable Monday, we are going to be talking about a person who I used to hear my mom play some music on Music Choice: R&B, when she was cleaning or cooking some food for the holidays. I used to hear various songs from that channel; which led me to unlock or find more artists and genre that I would enjoy listening to throughout my pre-adolescence and onward. When I was heading to home from work one day, I was listening to 101.5 the Vibe, and there was breaking new that a singer passed away, and the cause of death was not confirmed. I was shocked to hear the news that I wanted to talk about him. So, for this Memorable Monday, we are going to someone that tackles urban contemporary dance and occasional jazz tune, with his sophisticated, romantic soul ballads for his listeners, Freddie Jackson (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024).
A Brief History of Freddie Jackson
Freddie Anthony Jackson (Unknown, Discogs: Freddie Jackson, 2026), born on October 2, 1956, in the Harlem section of New York City, was an American R&B singer and songwriter (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). He was trained as a gospel singer from an early age, singing at the White Rock Baptist Church (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). That is where he met Paul Laurance, who would later become his producer and songwriting partner (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). After Jackson completed school, Jackson joined Larence’s group LJE (Laurence-Jones Ensemble) and played in the New York club scene (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). During the ‘80’s, Jackson moved to the West Coast and was the lead singer for the R&B band, Mystic Merlin, but later returned to New York to work with Laurence, again, at the Hush Productions company (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). He sang on a demo recording of Laurence’s compositions and was also a backup singer for Melba Moore after she caught his nightclub act (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024).
In 1985, Jackson landed a record deal with Capitol, and issued his debut album, Rock Me Tonight (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). The Laurence-penned title track stormed the R&B charts, spending a whopping six weeks at number one, and made Jackson an instant sensation on the urban contemporary radio (okay that title kind of sounds back-handed, but whatever) (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). “You Are My Lady” gave him a second straight R&B chart-topper and proved to be his highest-charting single on the pop side, peaking at number 13 (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). Other songs like, “He’ll Never Love You (Like I Do)” and “Love Is a Touch Away” also hitting the R&B album charts and went platinum (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). Keeping up with the momentum from his debut album, Jackson issued a follow-up set, Just Like the First Time appeared in 1986 on the heels of a number one R&B duet with Melba Moore, “A Little Bit More” (from her A Lot of Love) (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). Another platinum-seller, Just Like the First Time continued Jackson’s incredible dominance of the R&B singles charts; “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody”, and “Jam Tonight” all hit number one, while “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love” went to number two (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024).
In 1988, Jackson released Don’t Let Love Slip Away, which featured another R&B chart-topper in “Hey Lover”, along with two other hits in “Nice and Slow” and “Crazy (For Me)” (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). In 1990’s, the title track Do Me Again duplicated that feat, and “Main Course” just missed, topping at number two (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024). Seeking a new beginning, Jackson parted ways with Capitol later in 1993 and signed with RCA. In the following year, his label debuted, Here It Is (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024).
After a Christmas album he released, Jackson recorded Private Party (1995) for Scotti Brothers; its biggest single, “Rub Up Against You”, which reached the Top 25 of the R&B charts (Unknown, Freddie Jackson: Legacy, 2024).

On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Jackson’s family announced his passing, saying that Jackson passed away on Monday night, October 5, 2026, only 3 days after his birthday (Giacomazzo, 2026). The caused of death was not immediately disclosed. In 2024, Jackson disclosed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease (Giacomazzo, 2026).
Why is Freddie Jackson so Memorable?
Freddie Jackson was so memorable to me, because when I was younger, I thought that he was one of the Jackson 5 brothers (don’t laugh at me, it was hard to remember all the brothers’ names from the group). I remember hearing his music on the radio and Music Choice whether it was for cleaning, a road trip, or just needed something to listen to. He was so creative with his music, it was good that he wanted to make music and based on what I could gather from him, he seemed like he wasn’t so interested in fame or getting everyone to notice him. Jackson just wanted to do what he loved, which was making music. I love that he is an artist in the true since of making what he loved instead of making music just to make a quick buck. I thank him for creating music to listen to whenever I was down, or on the road, or needing something to get through the chores; I am grateful for his contribution to R&B and for making people love his multiple hits throughout the 80s and 90s. Thank you, and you will be missed.
